Thin Film Transistors Based on Solution-processed Organic Nanowire Arrays

Organic thin film transistors offer a big potential, for example as switches in flexible displays, but the processing and especially the patterning contain some challenges. In this project, a novel approach of patterning and simultaneously aligning organic semiconductor nanowires will be investigated. Self-assembled monolayers are patterned on a substrate to provide a surface with different wetting properties. Organic semiconductor nanowires that are grown in a solution-based process are deposited from solution onto these substrates, yielding a region-selective positioning of the nanowires. Via using a smart design of the surface patterns an alignment of the nanostructures can be achieved, which then can be integrated in organic thin film transistors. Different combinations of substrate functionalities, organic semiconductors and device setups will be tested, including electrolyte-gated transistors.

The research project will take place in the Laboratory of Macromolecular and Organic Materials of Prof. Holger Frauenrath at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) which is regularly ranked within the world’s best universities.
