Internship: Mimicking Brilliant whiteness of a Cyphochilus beetle

It is well-known that nature offers variety of colors archieved by pigmentation and/or periodic micro and nanostructures. However, the presence of white color cannot be caused by mentioned mechanisms. It was reported that some animals (i.e. beetle Cyphochilus) can achieve so called brilliant white color within a film with only 5-15 µm thickness due to sub-micrometersized anisotropic fibers serving for multiple scattering. By mimicking such structures, one can able to produce light material white paints and coating by replacing widely used TiO2 nanoparticles. The work is aimed to mimic the approach of multiple scattering in artificial materials by means of industrially applicable methods of phase inversion in polymers. The project will include fabrication of polymeric nanofibers, morphological and optical characterization of material. Further information about the project can be provided upon request, please contact Dr. Julia Syurik (julia.syurik@kit.edu).
