PhD position “Investigation of Staphylococcus aureus intracellular survival strategies”

The department/research group Infection Immunology of Prof. Dr. Eva Medina at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig (Germany) is offering a PhD position: “Investigation of Staphylococcus aureus intracellular survival strategies”. The position is fully funded by the German Research foundation (DFG) for a period of three years. Successful applicants will participate in the HZI International Graduate School for Infection Research.

AUFGABENBEREICH
Staphylococcus aureus is a highly relevant human pathogen. The ability of S. aureus to survive within phagocytes might constitute a route for both bacterial persistence and dissemination from the local site of infection. The aim of this project is to investigate the survival strategies evolved by S. aureus to survive within phagocytic cells using a newly genetically-encoded reporter system that allows to link the proliferative activity of S. aureus with its specific intracellular compartment. The work will include confocal microscopy as well as RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) for the analysis of host and pathogen transcriptional responses.

VORAUSSETZUNGEN
Master’s Degree/Diploma in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology, or a related field of the life sciences
Excellent English communication skills (written and spoken)
Ability to work independently and as part of an international team
A strong desire to do research with high self-motivation and enthusiasm
Pronounced interest in infectious disease research
Affinity to advanced techniques (single-cell RNA-seq, bioinformatics)
