Identification and Quantification of Microplastics by Raman Spectroscopy

In the division "Biosciences", section “Shelf Seas Systems Ecology” (Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research) we are looking for a Master student (Biology/Chemistry/Environmental Sciences) in 2016

Identification and Quantification of Microplastics by Raman Spectroscopy

In the framework of the European joint project BASEMAN (Defining the baselines and standards for microplastics analyses in European waters; http://www.jpi-oceans.eu/ecological-aspects-microplastics) we will apply Raman spectroscopy for the identification and quantification of microplastics in complex marine samples (sediments, plankton & biota). The analyses will be based on the Single Particle Explorer system (SPE; http://www.particle-explorer.com/).

For the evaluation (and expansion) of the polymer database, of size thresholds and of interactions with organic coatings (and methods to remove these coatings) we are looking for an enthusiastic, outstanding Master student, who enjoys working in a team and has good communication skills.
Experiences in analytical chemistry, polymer chemistry and spectroscopy are welcome but not necessarily required.
Zusatzinformationen
The Alfred Wegener Institute pursues research in the polar regions and the oceans of mid and high latitudes. As of the 18 Centres of the Hemlholtz Association it coordinates polar research in Germany and provides ships like the research icebreaker Polarstern and stations for the international scientific community.
